[00:00.00]Listen to a conversation between a student and an employee in the housing office.
[00:06.33]Employee: Hi, ready to check out? I'll just need your key.
[00:10.84]Student: Actually, there was a problem, so I’m not checking out yet.
[00:14.44]Employee: OK. Remember you have to clear out of your dorm by 4pm today.
[00:19.12]Student: OK. But the thing is I just got a couple of fines from the housing office that I’m supposed to pay.
[00:24.73]Employee: Yeah, we just did inspections yesterday afternoon.
[00:27.58]Student: Okay, but I don’t really agree with the fines, so I wanted to come here and see if you can help me understand what’s going on. And if I really need to pay them.
[00:36.26]Employee: Okay. Maybe I can help. So why exactly where you fined?
[00:41.35]Student: Well, for one thing, I had a really messy roommate, so the dorm room wasn’t exactly in great condition. So…
[00:47.53]Employee: I know it may seem unfair. But the policy is that both roommates are responsible for the condition of the dormitory room. [00:55.36]The university has this policy because there were so many cases in the past where neither person would admit to damages, making it hard for us to resolve these situations. [01:06.21]Both parties are responsible. So even if your roommate was the one who mess the room up.
[01:12.67]Student: Okay. Well, I’m not sure that's the fairest policy in the world, but it makes sense. So I’ll pay that fine. No problem.
[01:19.93]Employee: OK. So was there something else?
[01:22.54]Student: Right. The real problem is with another fine for a piece of missing furniture, a chair.
[01:27.74]Employee: Well, yeah, if there’s a piece of furniture missing, the university is going to have to charge you for that.
[01:34.61]Student: But the thing is I never had a chair. I borrowed one from the lounge for the year and then returned it yesterday morning. [01:41.44]You know I have a friend who lives in another building and his dorm room also had a chair missing, but he didn’t get a fine.
[01:48.66]Employee: OK. But there might be differences between your situation and your friends. [01:54.30]Um. Did you let your floor supervisor know that you had a missing chair?
[01:59.66]Student: I told her about it the day I moved in.
[02:01.62]Employee: And then…
[02:02.88]Student: Um, and then…
[02:05.49]Employee: Did she fill out a form about this? You would have gotten a copy.
[02:10.51]Student: I never saw a form.
[02:12.49]Employee: OK. I think this is why we’re having a problem here. [02:16.11]We need to have a paper record that your dorm room was missing a chair, just telling the floor super….
[02:23.19]Student: But honestly, I was expected to know that? that someone had to fill out a form?
[02:28.40]Employee: No, actually it was the responsibility of the floor supervisor to get that form to you when you informed her that your dorm room was missing a chair.
[02:37.78]Student: Ah. OK. So what about the fine?
[02:41.47]Employee: Well, I'm gonna have to talk to my manager, but I guess you're not going to have to pay that fine. [02:48.49]Don't write this in stone, but I’d imagine you're going to be okay. [02:53.10]Floor supervisors have responsibilities too.
