[00:15.33]MALE STUDENT: Well, I received a letter in my mailbox saying that I'm supposed to return a book that I checked out back in January— [00:20.98]uh, it's called Modern Social Problems— [00:23.98]but because I'm writing my senior thesis, I’m supposed to be able to keep the book all semester.
[00:28.63]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: So you signed up for “Extended Borrowing Privileges?”
[00:32.52]MALE STUDENT: Yeah.
[00:33.20]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: But we're still asking you to bring the book back?
[00:35.91]MALE STUDENT: Uh huh.
[00:36.60]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: Well, let me take a look and see what the computer says. [00:39.47]The title was Modern Social Problems?
[00:42.11]MALE STUDENT: Yeah.
[00:42.53]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: Okay…Oh, I see. [00:46.55]It's been recalled. [00:48.59]You can keep it all semester as long as no one else requests it. [00:52.81]But someone else has… [00:54.39]it looks like one of the professors in the sociology department has requested it, [00:59.35]so you have to bring it back even though you've got “extended Borrowing Privileges.” [01:04.05]You can check out the book again when it’s returned in a couple of weeks.
[01:07.24]MALE STUDENT: But I really need this book right now.
[01:09.80]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: Do you need all of it, or is there a certain section or chapter you're working with?
[01:14.34]MALE STUDENT: I guess there's one particular chapter I've been using lately for a section of my thesis. Why?
[01:19.78]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: Well, you can photocopy up to one chapter of the book. [01:23.43]Why don't you do that for the chapter you're working on right now—[01:26.62]and by the time you need the rest of the book, maybe it’ll have been returned. [01:30.59]We can even do the photocopying for you, because of the circumstances.
[01:34.67]MALE STUDENT: Oh, well, that would be great.
[01:37.38]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: I see you've got some books there. [01:39.00]Is that the one you were asked to return?
[01:40.99]MALE STUDENT: Uh, no. I left it in my dorm room. [01:43.86]These are books I need to check out today. [01:46.32]Um, is it OK if I bring that one by in a couple of days?
[01:49.58]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: Uh, actually, you need to return it today, [01:52.53]that is, if you want to check out those books today. [01:55.04]That's our policy.
[01:56.06]MALE STUDENT: Oh, I didn’t know that.
[01:57.84]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: Yeah, not a lot of people realize that. [02:00.50]In fact, every semester we get a few students who've had their borrowing privileges suspended completely because they haven't returned books. [02:08.34]They're allowed to use books only in the library; [02:11.08]they're not allowed to check anything out because of unreturned books.
[02:14.74]MALE STUDENT: That’s not good. [02:15.89]I guess I should head back down to the dorm right now then.
[02:19.34]FEMALE EMPLOYEE: But before you go, what you should do is fill out a form requesting the book back in two weeks. [02:25.34]You don't want to waste any time getting it back.
[02:28.04]MALE STUDENT: Thanks a lot! [02:28.85]Now I don't feel quite so bad about having to return the book.
