[00:00.00]W: How do you like your classes this semester?
[00:03.37]M: Not bad, I guess. Thermodynamics is the hardest. [00:06.81] It takes a long time for me to do the problems, and then I don’t have enough time to do the reading for English and history. [00:12.70] There just aren’t enough hours in a day.
[00:14.78]W: I hear you.
[00:16.18]M: How are your classes?
[00:17.61]W: Pretty good, actually. [00:23.15]All of my professors are great, and I really like my discussion class in Russian history.
[00:23.15]M: Oh, yeah? How come?
[00:24.45]W: Well, it’s really useful to get a chance to talk about what Dr. Finley says in the lecture, and also hear what other people have to say. [00:31.04]We have two really cool TAs who lead the discussions.
[00:34.05]M: Oh, yeah?
[00:34.85]W: One guy is working on his doctorate in Russian studies, and he spent a year in Russia learning the language. [00:40.35] He has this amazing ability to tie Dr. Finley’s lectures to things that he’s actually seen and experienced in Russia. [00:46.10]He’s a great storyteller. [00:47.89] The other TA—Anna—her family is from Russia, and she also has great stories, but mostly I like her way of drawing everyone into the discussion.
[00:56.39]M: That sounds great for you. But personally, I’ve never cared for discussion classes. [01:01.27]I prefer the lecture format. [01:02.97]I’d rather listen to my professor than to my classmates.
[01:05.65]W: Really? I like the discussions because we can go beyond the lecture and the reading. [01:09.85]Not that the lectures are boring or anything—I’m not saying that—what I mean is, I get a lot out of the discussions. [01:16.59] I think I learn more, you know, when I get a chance to talk about Russian history. [01:20.42]I certainly remember more of the details. [01:27.70]And that sure helped me on the first test.
[01:24.83]M: Well, that’s good. I’m glad you like your class. [01:27.60] So, are you still working in the pizza restaurant?
[01:30.63]W: No. Not enough time. I need a job, but the restaurant was getting to be too much time. [01:35.25]Somebody was always asking me to take their shift, and I’d end up working 25 hours a week. [01:39.78]I never had enough time to study.
[01:41.82]M: Hey, I know just the job for you! I saw—there’s a notice on the job board in the Student Center—I just saw it today. [01:49.23]There’s a job opening for host of the graduate student lounge.
[01:52.35]W: Oh, really? What does the host of the graduate student lounge do?
[01:55.91]M: Oh, I don’t know ... make coffee and talk to people, stuff like that. [02:00.41]But maybe you’d get a chance to do some reading during the quiet times.
[02:04.10]W: You know, I think that might be just the kind of job I could handle right now.
