[00:08.94]Employee: Hello, Kate. So how can I help you?
[00:12.38]Student: Well. It's about my dorm room.
[00:14.27]Employee: Ok, which dormitory do you live in.
[00:16.84]Student: Joyce hall.
[00:18.11]Employee: Yes, Joyce hall. I'm sure it can't be too comfortable living there, but you do realize it's just a temporary arrangement till the new dorms are ready.
[00:28.16]Student: I know, but...
[00:29.47]Employee: Well, I know there have been some construction delays, but by February, the very latest, the new building to be finished and ready to go. [00:36.97]So by next semester you should be moving into much nicer quarters.
[00:41.00]Student: But that's months away. [00:42.60]I mean the problem is not so much that there are four of us living in a double, I can deal with the bunk beds and the nonexistent closet space. [00:50.49]But we only have two desks between the four of us. [00:53.92]And that's a real problem. [00:55.75]I mean I have a desktop computer and nowhere to put it.
[00:58.50]Employee: And there's probably no room for more desks.
[01:01.46]Student: Not really. And two of my roommates are staying in Joyce hall next semester, so naturally they claim the desk for their computers.
[01:10.10]Employee: And you can't use one of the computer centers on campus or work at the library?
[01:15.74]Student: Oh I do, but all those buildings closed by nine.
[01:18.67]Employee: And could you work out an arrangement with one of your roommates? [01:22.09]Maybe she let you use her computer or at least share the desk space.
[01:26.54]Student: I could ask, but what happens at the end of the semester when we all have assignments? [01:30.73]Do it the same time? [01:32.21]Plus, it's not that my roommates are great people, but you know they like to talk when they're around, listen to music. [01:39.80]So what do I do if I'm working on a paper or something?
[01:43.00]Employee: It's probably not just your room. It's like this.
[01:46.59]Student: Oh no. Every room has at least one extra student. Everybody's complaining.
[01:51.71]Employee: I'm surprised I haven't heard anything.
[01:53.51]Student: It's only the third week of classes. [01:55.43]I'm sure you will hear more soon enough.
[01:57.24]Employee: I know your dorm is a big lounge. [02:01.32]I wonder if we could put in some desks, turn part of it into a study area.
[02:05.27]Student: It'll be nice to have some extra space to work, but still I mean what do I do with my computer?
[02:10.95]Employee: Unfortunately, for now, probably has to stay in its box. [02:16.08]But see, I don't think we've ever tried this. [02:20.28]If the computer support folks agreed, maybe we could arrange for you to have a laptop computer while you're living there. [02:26.91]I know they let faculty use them when they travel.
[02:29.32]Student: Oh.. Well, that will be great! [02:31.15]With the laptop, I could work lots of places.
[02:33.92]Employee: I'm not promising anything, but I'll see what I can do.
