[00:05.17]Advisor: So,Felicia, can you tell me why you haven't received a grade yet for your molecular biology course?
[00:11.94]Student: Well, it's a long story, but my RP73 experiment got messed up.
[00:20.32]Advisor: Wanna run that by me again, please?
[00:22.76]Student: I'm sorry. I was running at a protein essay...

[00:30.23]Student: It's like an experiment to determine whether this RP 73 protein could have potential therapeutic value.
[00:37.23]Advisor: Like be applied in a medical context?
[00:40.30]Student: That's the general idea of the hope anyway. [00:43.02]But in order to do that, you first have to isolate the protein, you know produce it in a pure enough form for the experiment. [00:49.94]And you have to produce enough of it also.
[00:52.92]Advisor: I think I'm starting to understand.
[00:55.88]Student: Well, when you're actually producing the protein that takes a long time, usually there's an overnight step where you need 16 hours in the incubator to what keep it at a warm enough temperature. [01:07.08]And well, that's when things started to go downhill.
[01:10.68]Advisor: Oh!You didn't wait long enough?
[01:12.72]Student: Actually, I waited too long. The protein got degraded, kind of disintegrated in there. [01:19.79]I needed to come in to stop the incubation on Saturday, but it was one of those days. [01:24.83]First, my car wouldn't start. I usually drive because the lab is kind of far, right? [01:29.28]So I tried taking the bus, but like I had no idea that there's hardly any buses on the weekend. [01:35.28]Now I'm really panicking and I think I'll try to phone it in call the lab and ask someone to take my experiment out of the incubator and stick it in the freezer. [01:44.34]But of course no one's there cause it's the weekend.
[01:47.26]Advisor: Oh, and was there no way to salvage the experiment?
[01:50.96]Student: Mhm. It was like 1 o'clock when I finally made it to the lab. [01:54.81]And by that time, the protein had degraded, was basically unusable.
[01:59.48]Advisor:I see, but couldn't you just start over?
[02:02.34]Student:Of course, and I did. Normally, this kind of stuff happens in the lab all the time. [02:08.60]And it's usually no big deal. But this experiment was too close to the end of the semester. Timing was too tight. [02:15.34]I mean, I'm writing it again as we speak, but in the meantime, the semesters over and the grades had to be turned in. [02:22.64]That's how I ended up with an incomplete.
[02:25.93]Advisor:Now, I understand. So you expect you'll be able to complete it soon?
[02:30.64]Student:I'll probably need a couple more weeks. [02:33.21]I spoke to my biology professor, and she doesn't mind that I'm using the lab over the break. [02:37.90]You know, the lab never closes. There's always something going on.
[02:41.20]Advisor:Yes. I may be in the humanities, but I know enough about the sciences to know that much. [02:47.60]All right, I'll be expecting to receive a grade.
