Some people think that education should be about memorising the important ideas of the past. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
Sir Isaac Newton, the great scientist described himself as a pygmy（1） standing on the shoulders of giants, meaning that all new discoveries are based on the work of those who have gone before. So it is important to know the ideas of the past to enable us to understand where we are in today’s world and to use that knowledge to make discoveries that will improve the lives of those who are to follow us. Education should be geared to this end（2）.
