[00:49.26]TUTOR:Hello, Sandy.
[00:51.33]How have you been getting on with your dissertation?
[00:53.62]SANDY:Fine, and I've been working hard on the various action points we agreed on our last tutorial.
[00:58.65]TUTOR:Do you want to talk me through what you've done?
[01:00.95]SANDY:Yeah, sure.
[01:01.57]Well, we agreed on three main targets for me to aim for.
[01:05.93]The first one was to find out about suitable data analysis software.
[01:10.29]TUTOR:Yes.
[01:10.86]SANDY:And what I decided to do was to look through catalogues specialising in IT.
[01:15.10]TUTOR:That’s a good idea.
[01:16.25]What did you come up with?
[01:17.68]SANDY:I found the names of two promising ones.
[01:20.41]TUTOR:Right.
[01:20.68]SANDY:But I also thought it'd be worthwhile talking to a lecturer.
[01:24.40]TUTOR:Oh right.
[01:25.37]Who did you see?
[01:26.80]SANDY:Jane Prince Do you know her?
[01:29.20]She’s in the Computer Centre.
[01:31.26]TUTOR:Yes, of course, she's the new Head.
[01:33.36]SANDY:Yes.
[01:33.72]Well, she was very helpful.
[01:35.38]TUTOR:Oh, that's good.
[01:36.41]Did she suggest anything in particular?
[01:38.91]SANDY:Yeah.
[01:39.20]She recommended software called Vivat and said I should book up for a couple of practice sessions using Vivat.
[01:45.11]TUTOR:Great.
[01:45.65]I’m sure you’ll find them useful.
[01:47.55]SANDY:And, of course, the second target was to draw up a survey checklist which I…
[01:52.44]TUTOR:Yes, you emailed me it last week.
[01:55.50]SANDY:Have you had a chance to look...?
[01:56.80]TUTOR:Of course, um I think it’s good.
[02:01.25]Very much on the right lines.
[02:03.48]I'd say your first two sections arc spot on.
[02:06.88]I wouldn't suggest that you change anything there, but in section three you really do need to have questions on teaching experience.
[02:14.83]SANDY:Yeah.
[02:15.49]I was thinking that section looked a bit short.
[02:17.71]TUTOR:Right.
[02:18.52]SANDY:And my third target was, do further reading on discipline.
[02:23.16]TUTOR:Oh yes.
[02:23.63]I mentioned a couple of writers, didn't I?
[02:25.66]SANDY:Yes, well I got hold of the Banerjee and I thought that was excellent.
[02:29.27]But I'm afraid I didn't manage to get hold of the essays about classroom management - you know, the ones by Simon Ericsson.
[02:35.66]The bookshop said it was out of print and the library doesn't have a copy.
[02:39.88]TUTOR:Oh right, and I’m afraid I’ve lent my copy to another student.
[02:43.50]What I suggest you do is try the library again - this time apply for it through the service called special loans.
[02:51.41]Have you done that before?
[02:52.50]You're entitled to six books a year.
[02:54.89]SANDY:Yes.
[02:55.94]No problem.
[02:57.18]That's what I’ll do.
[02:58.21]TUTOR:So, lots of useful work done.
[03:41.97]TUTOR:So, let’s look at some new targets.
[03:45.91]We’ll start by having a chat about your Chapter One.
[03:49.52]I very much enjoyed reading it.
[03:51.69]Your written style is very clear and you’ve included lots of interesting descriptions of education in your target area.
[03:59.71]I’ve just got a couple of suggestions for some additional work.
[04:04.63]SANDY:Of course.
[04:05.66]Could I just ask - what do you think I should call it?
[04:08.71]TUTOR:Well, I’d go for something like Context Review.
[04:12.44]What do you think?
[04:13.55]SANDY:Well, short and to the point.
[04:15.36]TUTOR:Exactly.
[04:15.80]Now, as regards specific areas to work on, I’d be quite interested to have a few more statistics about the schools in the different zones.
[04:24.35]SANDY:Oh, that wouldn’t be a problem.
[04:25.57]I can get them from the Internet.
[04:26.98]TUTOR:Great, and although you did make a reference to quite a few different writers, I think you should aim to cite more works written later than 2000.
[04:35.82]SANDY:OK.
[04:36.20]That’s more difficult, but I can try.
[04:39.40]When do you want that done by?
[04:41.26]TUTOR:Oh, it’s not urgent.
[04:42.72]Um I should aim for the end of term.
[04:45.63]But in the meantime, I think you should also be thinking about Chapter Two.
[04:49.88]SANDY:Should I be drafting it already?
[04:52.10]TUTOR:No, but I think you should note down its main sections.
[04:54.82]SANDY:Yes.
[04:55.82]You know, I always find that the hardest part.
[04:58.55]TUTOR:I always find it helpful to put some ideas on index cards.
[05:02.16]SANDY:Yeah.
[05:02.75]TUTOR:Um… and then you can sort them, and even lay them out on the floor.
[05:06.60]It’s a real help.
[05:07.69]SANDY:Well, I’ll certainly try it!
[05:09.91]When would the deadline be for that?
[05:11.89]TUTOR:My advice would be to get it done before you embark upon the research.
[05:16.92]You can always change it later if you need to.
[05:20.60]SANDY:OK.
[05:20.57]I’ll get going on that then.
